Met een achtergrond in exacte wetenschappen zoals wiskunde en natuurkunde vond Paul Verhoeven zijn ware passie in de filmwereld, waar hij debuteerde met de korte film Eén hagedis teveel in 1960. Zijn grote doorbraak in Nederland kwam met de televisieserie Floris in 1969, en hij verwierf internationale erkenning met films als Turks Fruit in 1973 en de blockbuster Robocop in 1987. Verhoeven’s prijzenkast bevat niet alleen prestigieuze onderscheidingen als een Gouden Kalf en een Golden Globe, maar ook een aantal Razzies, waarmee hij ook de keerzijde van succes omarmt. Ondanks zijn leeftijd blijft de regisseur gedreven om nieuwe verhalen naar het witte doek te brengen, zonder tekenen van vertraging.
