Cuando ella y su hermano fueron diagnosticados con diabetes tipo 2, Gabourey decidió ir al quirófano y la actriz perdió 180 libras en 18 meses. Hoy ella está más confiada y más feliz, Sidibe continúa trabajando con un entrenador fitness y se concentra en su dieta y en un seguro en contra de ganar peso.
