Aunque comenzó su carrera como torero en 1970, había hecho una breve aparición como actor de reparto en la película Fortunata y Jacinta.
Su éxito en el cine le abrió muchas puertas en el mundo de la actuación, y entregó una variedad de actuaciones, algunas de las cuales estuvieron a la altura de los altos estándares establecidos por sus fanáticos, y otras se quedaron cortas.
