Hank’s Accent

Initially, when Tom Hanks signed on for the role of Forrest Gump, he was quite reluctant to speak in the accent specified by the director. In fact, Zemeckis asked Hanks to teach Michael Conner Humphrey (the boy who played young Gump) the accent he had in mind for the character. Instead, Hanks suggested that he mimic Humphrey’s natural accent because it seemed to be more authentic for Gump’s characterization. It was a good insurance on Hanks’s part because the accent was one of the most memorable things in the film; he even managed to perfectly mimic young Michael’s accent!
