James J. Hill was best known for being the chief executive officer of the Great Northern Railway. Despite being blind in one eye, he made a huge wealth out of his business and his 42-room mansion in Saint Paul, Ramsey Country in Minnesota bears testimony to that fact.
Overlooking the Mississippi River, the huge house was built so that the servants can live within the premises as well. Turns out, Hill had a generous heart and a big family, too. He had to have an estate vast enough to house and accommodate his 10 children.
The house was completed by 1891 and the amount spent was close to a million, which is a huge amount in today’s times. The house is open today for tours which highlight the breathtaking grandeur of this property.
