“The Land of Fire and Ice:” Exploring the Wonders of Iceland

Iceland is located on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, which is the boundary between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. The tectonic plates are constantly shifting and the gaps created are filled with magma, resulting in substantial volcanic activity in this region. The country has, therefore, 130 volcanoes, of which 30 are active.
The power of the Earth can create both destruction and beauty. In the Westman Islands, an area of Iceland, there was considerable damage due to volcanic eruptions. However, it also left behind a unique formation of basalt rock shaped like an elephant’s head. This remarkable structure has since become a popular landmark.
