“The Land of Fire and Ice:” Exploring the Wonders of Iceland
Yule Lads Instead of Santas
For Icelanders, Christmas is celebrated a bit differently than in other parts of the world. Instead of Santa Claus, they have a group of 13 Yule Lads who each visit once, starting 13 days before Christmas. On this special night, children will await small presents from the lads.
Iceland also has the tradition of ‘Jólabókaflóð,’ or ‘Christmas book flood,’ in which everyone receives a book as a gift. This isn’t too surprising, as reading has been a part of their culture since the 13th century, and it is estimated that one in ten citizens have wrote a book in their lifetime.
