“The Land of Fire and Ice:” Exploring the Wonders of Iceland

A Legacy Carried Through the Trees

Iceland is home to centuries-old folklore, with tales of magic, mythical creatures, and Viking legends. Evidence of this enchanting folklore can be seen in the Hólavallagarður cemetery in Reykjavik, which is believed to have originally been a Viking burial ground where trees were planted on graves.

Until recently, the only way to connect with those who had passed was by touching the trees in the cemetery, a tradition that has been passed down through the generations. While the tradition of planting trees on graves may not be universally accepted, it still has a special place in Icelandic culture and is a way to honor the dead.
