“The Land of Fire and Ice:” Exploring the Wonders of Iceland

Akureyri’s Light of Positivity

In 2008, the people of Iceland were devastated by an economic crash. In an effort to lift the spirits of the citizens, the town of Akureyri installed heart-shaped fixtures on their traffic lights. This small act of kindness was initiated by the former mayor, Eiríkur Björn Björgvinsson, who believes it had a huge impact on the people.

Akureyri is the second-largest urban area in Iceland, located just 100 kilometers away from the Arctic Circle. The population of Akureyri is almost 19,642 and it is home to many tourist attractions, such as the Botanical Garden. This garden showcases many varieties of plants from Iceland and other nations, including Greenland.
