Cresciuto nel quartiere Giambellino, Abatantuono ha iniziato con il cabaret, conquistando il pubblico fino al grande successo. Nei primi anni della sua carriera, interpretava un personaggio tipico del meridionale che arriva al Nord in cerca di lavoro, vivendo una serie di avventure comiche e quasi surreali. L’attore ha sottolineato spesso come il Nord sia stato reso grande dai meridionali che vi hanno lavorato.
