RADIOAKTIVES JOD – DER FRÜHE KILLER
Wie sich herausstellte, war vor allem radioaktives Jod für den Verlust von Menschenleben verantwortlich, und die katastrophalen Auswirkungen dieses Isotops auf die Ersthelfer und die Arbeiter der Anlage erwiesen sich als tödlich. Nach der Explosion sahen einige überlebende Arbeiter ein blaues Licht um den Reaktor. Später stellte sich heraus, dass die Ursache dafür eine Ionisierung der Luft war. Die Arbeiter atmeten das in der Luft schwebende Jod ein, was zu einer Schädigung ihrer Schilddrüsen und inneren Organe führte. Tatsächlich verlor ein Großteil der Arbeiter ihr Leben aufgrund von Schilddrüsenkrebs, wie mehrere Unfallanwälte und Experten berichten. Jodtabletten sollen heute bei einem vergleichbaren Ereignis die Aufnahme dieses Jods durch die Schilddrüse verhindern.
