Diese besondere Gedenkstätte (siehe Bild oben) wurde errichtet, um an die Opfer und diejenigen zu erinnern, die versuchten, die Katastrophe aus erster Hand einzudämmen und dabei ums Leben kamen. Es soll wohl an ihre Tapferkeit und an die Opfer erinnern, die sie während dieser schrecklichen Tragödie gebracht haben. Diesen Helden haben viele Menschen heute ihr Leben zu verdanken. Der Fonds für die Ummantelung des Tschernobyl-Reaktors wurde 1997 auf Anraten anderer Organisationen mit dem Ziel gegründet, radioaktive Gebäude auf sichere Weise abzureißen. Sachverständige, die sich für diese Sache einsetzen, sind der Meinung, dass ein solcher Schritt die Bewohner der Region um Tschernobyl langfristig retten würde.
