Hours later, near midnight, I walked into the living room, where my mother-in-law was sprawled out, engrossed in her TV show. “I finished everything on the list,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. She barely looked up, sneering. “Good for you,” she said, her tone dripping with disdain. “Now get out.” Her words hit like a slap, sharp and cold. But I didn’t say anything. I stayed quiet, trying to swallow the hurt.

Even after completing all her tasks, she still kicked me out. I had done my part, right? Yet, with no choice, I found myself packing up and leaving. What else could I do?
