“We must find who’s behind this,” Officer Davis said. Melissa nodded, a strange determination rising in her. As they discussed the ring’s history, a memory hit her. “Could Steve be involved?” she asked, surprised by the thought. Slowly, she started recounting odd moments. Steve often disappeared without explanation and kept a collection of antiques, never saying where he got them. She recalled one night he’d come home, eyes shining with excitement, holding a small box—the same box that had contained the ring.
