Mr. Harris’s eyes locked onto hers, his face serious and intense, like he was searching for something in her expression. Melissa felt her cheeks turn pink, unsure if it was from the memory of her ex or the suspicious tone in Mr. Harris’s voice.
“My ex-boyfriend gave it to me a few years ago,” she replied, explaining they’d broken up and she just wanted to let go of the ring. Mr. Harris rubbed his chin thoughtfully. “Hmm… I see,” he said slowly, then asked, “Do you know where he got this ring?” Melissa shook her head, explaining she’d always thought he’d just bought it from a jewelry store.
