Melissa was scared but managed to nod. “We’ll be monitoring every second, ready to step in,” Officer Johnson assured her, though his words couldn’t wholly calm her nerves. In a dim room, a technician fitted her with a hidden microphone and earpiece. “You’ll hear us, and we’ll hear every word you and Steve exchange,” he explained.
