John Lewis (1940–2020) – $10K
John Lewis didn’t care about wealth—he cared about justice. At the time of his passing in 2020, his net worth was estimated at $300K, a modest fortune for a man who dedicated his career to public service. Before his 33-year run as a congressman, he was a civil rights hero.
As chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, he worked alongside Martin Luther King Jr. and helped organize the historic 1963 March on Washington. He led the “Bloody Sunday” march in Selma, where he was brutally beaten for demanding voting rights. His congressional salary was his primary source of income, with only a small IRA and a modest bank account.
