Walter Mercado fue el más conocido y mediático astrólogo que ha existido en la televisión de habla hispana. De hecho es muy raro encontrar un personaje como él a nivel mundial, ya que la astrología no es tomada en serio la mayoría de veces y aunque puede que algun noticiero o pagina de periódico le de un espacio, generalmente no es el suficiente como para que sea importante o haga alguna diferencia.
No es el caso de Shanti Ananda o Walter Mercado, quien con su carisma y excentricidad se ganó su propio programa.
Nunca se le conoció pareja luego de perder a su esposa en un accidente cuando era muy joven, pero poco antes de morir, hizo pública su relación con Mariette Detotto, una ex conejita de playboy con quien segun Mercado, tenían un amor divino y puro.
