Graduating from nursing school is just the start—new nurses still need to pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) before practicing. For some registered nurses (RNs), though, that’s only the beginning. Many set their sights on advanced roles like becoming a Clinical Nurse Specialist, which means heading back to school for a master’s or even a doctoral degree.

It’s a tough but rewarding climb for those dedicated to advancing their careers. And while the profession offers plenty of pathways, there’s always a backup plan in healthcare. For example, shifting to dental hygiene is not a bad idea, just in case.
