The origins of the words “nursing” and “nurse” trace back to Latin roots, where they originally meant “wet nurse” and “nourish.” However, they didn’t gain much traction until the thirteenth century. And here’s the fun twist: William Shakespeare’s use of “nurse” in his play “The Comedy of Errors,” was one of the earliest literary nods to the term we know today.
Imagine the word popping up in Elizabethan theater. It was likely a bit of a daring choice back then. Thanks to wordsmiths like Shakespeare, what began as a term for caretakers became a title for one of the most trusted professions.
