Over the years, making movies gets even more expensive. Cameras, props, sets, equipments, special effects, production crew and actors. These are just a few things that require a huge amount of money.

But the films on this list have earned it back, some got it doubled and tripled, but there are some who flopped as well. Most of the films that need hundreds of millions or even billions, requires special effects with extreme costume and set designs.

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES
COST: $410 Million

This Johnny Depp film is considered to be the most expensive film ever made in Hollywood history, spending more than $400 million. Alongside Penelope Cruz, this film was shot in Hawaii and Great Britain. They used the same 3D film technology that was used in the top grossing film of all time, Avatar, with more than 1,200 computer generated sequences. But everything was worth it because the film made about $1.046 billion even if the critics said this wasn't the best film in the franchise. In 2017, another installment of the series will be released and it will be entitled Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Orlando Bloom will be making a comeback in the upcoming installment.

AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON
COST: $330.6 Million

Well, the first movie Avengers was a huge success, not just because of the amazing special effects of the superheroes, but because these superheroes were played by the coolest actors in Hollywood like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson and it even has Samuel Jackson on it. It is so star studded that getting to watch all of them playing these superheroes, made it even better. So they made a sequel, which cost more than $300 million, and again was a huge box office hit and they made about $1.403 billion.

One of the reasons it was so expensive is because they shot the film in different countries like South Korea, Italy, USA and Bangladesh. Because of the success of the first two, they of course are going to be releasing two more in the franchise, Infinity War Part 1 and Part 2.

JOHN CARTER
Cost: $306.6 Million

Unfortunately, this sci-fi movie was a major flop. Apparently, a lot of scenes needed to be reshot that is why it took them so long to finish it. It only made $284.1 million which obviously didn't make up for the cost of the production.

Some film analysts blame the casting which contributed to the film's disappointing revenue, or lack thereof. They filmed it within the U.S. and the U.K. There were more than 2,000 visual effects that were added in the film, which made it even more expensive. A sequel was apparently cancelled according to sources because of the bad reviews.

TANGLED
Cost: $286 Million

The only animated film that has made it into the top 5 is none other than Tangled. Almost everyone, from kids to kids at heart, got so excited when Disney finally made a musical comedy animation adaptation of Rapunzel written by the Brothers Grimm.

The film was expensive to make because she is the very first Disney princess to be rendered in 3D. It apparently cost the production 6 years to develop state of the art programs, especially when they were working on Rapunzel’s glowing locks. This is also considered to be the most expensive animated film of all time. The animated film earned $598.1 Million in the box office.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2
Cost: $255 Million

The second installment of Andrew Garfield’s portrayal of the new Spider-Man cost more than $200 million. He was of course accompanied by Emma Stone and Jamie Foxx. Everything was filmed in New York to actually bring the authenticity from the Marvel comics. It was also filmed exclusively on a 35mm film, which fascinated a lot of viewers. Although critics weren't too happy with Garfield’s portrayal as he was compared to the original actor who played Peter Parker in the first 3 Spider-Man Trilogy, Tobey McGuire.
