Secondo gli scienziati ucraini, la terra circostante la centrale nucleare non è adatta alla sopravvivenza umana e rimarrà tale per quasi 20.000 anni. Alcuni altri scienziati ritengono che 30.000 anni sarebbero una scelta più sicura e gli avvocati specializzati in morti ingiuste nominati da organizzazioni internazionali sono della stessa opinione. Esistono anche restrizioni su quanto vicino si possa accedere alla zona per la caccia e la pesca. È meglio essere prudenti che pentirsi, e si consiglia di non oltrepassare il confine consentito.
