LA COPERTURA DELL’UNIONE SOVIETICA
Quando la centrale nucleare svedese ha informato il mondo sui livelli elevati di radiazioni, l’Unione Sovietica si è trovata in difficoltà poiché l’Occidente esercitava costantemente pressioni sugli ufficiali sovietici per ottenere una spiegazione concreta. I sovietici non avevano altra scelta se non ammettere che era realmente avvenuto un incidente che aveva causato la morte di due persone. Non rivelarono nulla su quante vite fossero state effettivamente perse e sulle conseguenze dell’esplosione di Chernobyl, mantenendo anche il loro popolo nell’oscurità. Il 6 maggio, l’Unione Sovietica confessò finalmente che qualcosa non andava, poiché dovevano chiudere le banche e le scuole a Kyiv, la capitale dell’Ucraina, che si trovava a circa 65 miglia dalla centrale nucleare.
