Las personas que vivían cerca de Chernobyl cuando ocurrió el desastre nuclear comenzaron a desarrollar cáncer, con tasas de incidencia que aumentaron con el paso de los años. Mientras los abogados especializados en accidentes responsabilizan a las autoridades por la tragedia, los funcionarios sostienen que la evacuación de la zona, aunque tardía, pudo haber reducido el daño a largo plazo. Argumentan que las personas que vivían en las cercanías de la planta ya estaban expuestas a enfermedades antes de la construcción del reactor y que, tras la evacuación, la exposición a la radiación fue reducida, lo que resultó en menos casos de enfermedad.
Sin embargo, este argumento parece poco convincente, y muchos siguen cuestionando si la evacuación fue suficiente para mitigar el impacto real del desastre.
