Tras la explosión en Chernóbil, el medio ambiente quedó severamente contaminado, con el fuego de la central ardiendo durante más de una semana. A pesar de la magnitud del desastre, al compararlo con las pruebas nucleares realizadas en las décadas de 1950 y 1960, la tragedia de Chernóbil parece tener un impacto más reducido. De hecho, estudios han demostrado que los niveles de radiación en el desierto de Nevada, Estados Unidos, son casi equivalentes a los de la zona de Chernóbil.
Los abogados han argumentado que estos desastres, aunque lamentables, son difíciles de prevenir. A raíz de esta tragedia, las pruebas nucleares en superficie fueron finalmente prohibidas, protegiendo al medio ambiente global.
