Aunque el desastre de Chernobyl y Pripyat ocurrió en Ucrania, el impacto más devastador se sintió en Bielorrusia, que sufrió una contaminación mucho más grave que su vecino. A pesar de que Pripyat se encuentra cerca de la frontera ucraniana, la radiación se dispersó mayormente hacia Bielorrusia, afectando gravemente su territorio y la salud de su población. Se estima que aproximadamente el 75% del material radiactivo cayó sobre sus campos, lo que empeoró la situación en el país.
Curiosamente, la magnitud de la crisis fue tal que Suecia, el primer país en detectar la radiación en sus propios cielos, fue también el primero en alertar al mundo sobre la gravedad del desastre. La historia de Chernobyl es, sin duda, un recordatorio de la importancia de la vigilancia y la cooperación internacional ante eventos nucleares.
