Rutherford B. Hayes – Spiegel Grove, Fremont, Ohio

Before he assumed the presidential seat, Rutherford B. Hayes had ample experience in the world of politics. Aside from having been the governor of Ohio, Hayes also served in the US House of Representatives before he aimed big in his career.

The Spiegel Grove was built in 1860 by Sardis Birchard, Rutherford B. Haye’s uncle. After Hayes came to live here twenty years later, he carried out small renovations here and there, built five extra bedrooms, and constructed a staircase which led to the fourth floor.

Being a lawyer, Hayes fought for the runaway slaves in court and tasted success in several cases. As the 19th US president, his most noted achievement was reinstating the population’s trust in the President’s office which it lost after the former president, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated.
