35 Years After The Chernobyl Disaster – This Is What It Looks Like Today

The Ongoing Clean-Up Efforts

Reactor four was covered with a protective shell or sarcophagus which proved to be quite effective, but everyone knew that this particular solution wouldn’t last for a lifetime. They covered the reactor core with lead, sand, and boron and constructed a large concrete structure over it. However, the shell has started to give away and cracks and leaks were observed on it. Ukraine started erecting a brand new sarcophagus around the reactor in 2016, but the officials believe that the entire clean-up procedure would not be completed until 2065. Current officials would take retirement and new officials would take their place, but Chernobyl wouldn’t see a brighter future soon.
