The Financial Cost That Led To The Downfall Of The Soviet Union

Though there were plenty of reasons why the Soviet Union broke down in 1991, some economists are of the opinion that a lump sum of $18 million spent behind the nuclear plant has led to its downfall. The economic condition of the Soviet Union was affected so badly that a comeback was almost impossible. If $18 million is adjusted to inflation, the figures stand at $41 billion today. Mikhail Gorbachev, the then-Soviet leader had claimed such a huge amount was shelled out to just contain the entire area and health expenses were separate. As per recent data, Ukraine spends almost 5 to 7 percent of the total fund on issues related to Chernobyl.
