Dominique Ariane Swain nació el 12 de agosto de 1980 y pasó su infancia en Malibu, que se encuentra en el estado de California, Estados Unidos. Es la segunda de tres niñas que han producido su madre Cindy y su padre David, ingeniero eléctrico, junto con sus hermanas Alexis, que es maquilladora, y Chelsea, que es actriz. Debutó como actriz en la controvertida versión de la película basada en la novela de Vladimir Nabokov y protagonizada por Stanley Kubrick, titulada Lolita, que fue dirigida por Adrian Lyne. Fue una primera actuación poderosa para la joven actriz, y Lyne había visto su actuación en una audición en video que había organizado con una amiga mientras estaba entre agencias. Lyne la seleccionó de un grupo de más de 2500 mujeres que competían por el papel. Lyne estaba encantada con su actuación y leyó sus líneas no del guión sino directamente de la novela. Audicionando con éxito para el papel de Rosalinda, una vieja amiga imaginaria.
