USS Samuel B. Roberts

The USS Samuel B. Roberts earned its legendary nickname, “the destroyer escort that fought like a battleship,” during the Battle of Leyte Gulf on October 25, 1944, near the island of Samar. Despite its smaller size, this ship went toe-to-toe with Japanese warships and held its ground heroically before it was sunk. Its fierce stand played a crucial role in turning the tide of the battle.

This ship launched on January 20, 1944, and was named after Samuel Booker Roberts, Jr., a Navy hero who received the Navy Cross for courageously steering a landing craft toward enemy flotillas during a 1942 evacuation mission.
