USS Peleliu

Before its decommissioning in 2015, the USS Peleliu was a key player in the Tarawa-class amphibious assault ships. Originally considered for names like USS Khe Sanh or USS Da Nang, it was ultimately named after the Battle of Peleliu from WWII. The Peleliu was commissioned in 1980 and quickly earned its nicknames—the “Iron Nickel” and “The Fighting Five”—thanks to its numerous rescue and evacuation missions.

This ship lived by its motto “Pax per Potens,” which is Latin for “Peace through Power.” Even though it’s no longer active, the legacy of the USS Peleliu still stands as a testament to its vital role in U.S. naval history.
