Joe DiMaggio e Marilyn Monroe si conobbero nel 1952, grazie a un incontro organizzato da un amico comune. All’epoca, DiMaggio, già una leggenda del baseball, era all’apice della sua fama sportiva, mentre Monroe stava emergendo come una delle star più promettenti di Hollywood. Si dice che DiMaggio fosse rimasto colpito da una foto di Marilyn e avesse espresso il desiderio di incontrarla. Un amico comune li presentò durante un appuntamento organizzato a Los Angeles, e da lì iniziò la loro storia. Dopo un breve corteggiamento, i due si sposarono il 14 gennaio 1954, in una cerimonia civile a San Francisco. Tuttavia, il loro matrimonio durò solo 9 mesi, poiché divorziarono nell’ottobre dello stesso anno (il 27 ottobre 1954). Nonostante il divorzio, i due mantennero un legame speciale per il resto della loro vita. DiMaggio, ad esempio, rimase vicino a Monroe fino alla sua morte nel 1962 e si occupò dei suoi funerali.
