Même les classes moyennes éprouvaient beaucoup de difficultés à devenir client du restaurant dans lequel Cindy travaillait. En effet, les prix des plats s’avéraient particulièrement exorbitants. D’un côté, elle avait justement choisi ce restaurant pour son prestige. Mais d’un autre côté, elle ne s’attendait pas à atterrir dans un monde tant luxueux qu’impitoyable.
Malheureusement, avec le luxe viennent aussi les distinctions de rang. Cindy avait du mal à comprendre cette psychologie. Elle se demandait pourquoi, dans cet établissement, des personnes gaspillaient une fortune rien que pour manger, alors qu’à deux pas de là se distinguaient d’autres qui ne connaissaient que la famine. En seulement une nuit, certains dépensaient plus de 100 $.
La scène à laquelle elle devait assister tous les jours illustrait parfaitement le contraste des classes sociales. Cette situation réveilla en elle une sensation d’injustice, mais aussi de compassion.
