“The Land of Fire and Ice:” Exploring the Wonders of Iceland

Iceland Does Not Host the World’s Largest Banana Plantation

A well-circulated rumor about Iceland suggests that the island country is the largest producer of bananas in Europe. However, the news is just a myth owing to facts and figures from several sources. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has confirmed that Iceland imports fruit from other countries to suffice for its consumption.

France, Spain, Portugal, and Greece are the largest producers of bananas in Europe, while Iceland’s main produce includes potatoes, green vegetables, barley, and oats. In the past, the country attempted to produce bananas but the idea was unfeasible as it took much longer to grow in Iceland than in other parts of the world.
