“The Land of Fire and Ice:” Exploring the Wonders of Iceland

Tracing Your Roots: The Book of Icelanders

In 2010, Friðrik Skúlason, an anti-virus software entrepreneur, collaborated with the genetics company deCODE to launch the Book of Icelanders, also known as Íslendingabók. This website was created using a database developed by deCODE in 1997, and its original purpose was to help citizens trace their genealogy.

The project grew to include a mobile app that allowed the country’s natives to determine if they were closely related to their potential dates. This mobile app, created by a group of college students was named Íslendinga-App. This feature was especially beneficial in a country with a small population like Iceland and quickly gained popularity among its masses.
