“The Land of Fire and Ice:” Exploring the Wonders of Iceland

Icelandic Midges

Iceland is a country of extremes, with its abundance of natural wonders and an impressive array of insect species. Although there are over 1,300 types of bugs that exist in Iceland, these don’t include mosquitoes. Nonetheless, their absence shouldn’t make visitors think that citizens are safe from insect annoyances, because that isn’t the case.

Midges, which are similar to mosquitos, can be found in the country. These tiny insects can get into homes through windows and doors, leaving itchy, swollen bites or even blisters. Unfortunately, window and door screens aren’t very common there, making it easier for the midges to enter homes.
