Home to The First Female President
Iceland has long been a pioneer in gender equality. In 1980, the world saw its first democratically elected female president, Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, who defeated three male candidates to become the country’s fourth president. She won 33.6 percent of the vote, and in 1988, she was re-elected to office with a staggering 94.6 percent.
Even today, Finnbogadóttir is a strong advocate for women’s rights and is highly respected in the world of politics. She was honored at the Reykjavik Global Forum, where the Prime Minister of Iceland and other high-ranking female politicians celebrated her legacy. Finnbogadóttir’s career is an inspiration for women all over the world.
