“The Land of Fire and Ice:” Exploring the Wonders of Iceland

Unlocking the Mysteries of Icelandic

Visiting Iceland can be intimidating with its distinct language, but tourists need not worry as locals are known to be excellent English speakers. The country’s language is unique with an expansive vocabulary to describe their ever-changing weather conditions, with 100 words for wind alone and a specific term for having ice cream while driving.

This is further demonstrated through their ability to read Old Norse, an ancient language that is still present in Iceland and contributes to modern-day Icelandic. Nonetheless, almost all citizens in the country now speak Icelandic, which is a North Germanic language and is closely related to Faroese, Norwegian, and Danish.
