La explosión de Chernobyl no solo afectó a los seres humanos, sino que la radiación devastó rápidamente el ecosistema local. En los días siguientes al desastre, un grupo de pinos cercano al reactor cuatro se tornó de un color marrón rojizo, lo que dio origen al nombre de “Bosque Rojo”. Ante el riesgo de propagación, los árboles fueron talados con rapidez, aunque el daño ya estaba hecho.
Hoy en día, la fauna de la zona no ha logrado recuperarse completamente. La vida silvestre en la región sigue siendo escasa y menos diversa que en otros ecosistemas, dejando claro que, como siempre, el medio ambiente es el que paga el precio de la negligencia humana.
