USS Chief MCM-14
The USS Chief (MCM-14) is one of 11 active Avenger-class mine countermeasure ships in the U.S. Navy, designed specifically for minesweeping missions to keep strategic waterways safe. Launched on June 12, 1993, and part of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, this ship has a unique build—its hull is made of wood and glass-reinforced plastic for good reason.
Those materials reduce its magnetic signature, making it less likely to trigger underwater mines. Plus, they provide a buffer against blasts. The USS Chief is homeported in Sasebo, Japan, and plays a crucial role in maintaining safe passage for naval and commercial vessels, proving that even unconventional designs have their advantages.
