USS Ponce LPD-15

The USS Ponce (LPD-15) was a key player in the Navy’s fleet of Austin-class amphibious transport docks, bridging the gap between the earlier Raleigh-class and the newer San Antonio-class ships. It’s known as a “floating forward staging base” and defied several decommissioning attempts, remaining active until 2017 after serving an impressive 48 years.

While it often patrolled the U.S. East Coast, the USS Ponce also saw action abroad, including during Operation Desert Shield in 1990 and U.S. missions in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. Its adaptability and long service record made it a true workhorse of the United States Navy’s amphibious operations.
