USS Pueblo (AGER – 2)

In the 1960s, the U.S. Navy launched the Banner-class environmental research ships, secretly operating as intelligence spy ships. The series included the Banner, Pueblo, and Palm Beach. On January 23, 1968, during the Pueblo Crisis, North Korean forces captured the USS Pueblo with 83 crew members aboard.

That violent incident led to one death and heightened Cold War tensions between the U.S. and North Korea. To this day, the USS Pueblo remains in North Korea as a museum exhibit—a stark reminder of past conflicts. Interestingly, the U.S. Navy still lists the Pueblo as an active ship, making it the only commissioned vessel held captive by a foreign power.
